1m² of flax 2026 is here!
How to participate?
Duration: April - November 2026

After the first successful year of the project, we continue in 2026. The project will help participants to try growing and processing their own 1m2 of flax suitable for textile use. Within a one-time fee of CZK 399 for participation, you will receive a starter pack containing seeds for 1m² of flax, access to video tutorials and admission to related events.

Who can participate?
Anyone. Participation is not limited by age or experience.
You just need a small space to grow and a willingness to try something new. You can participate yourself or purchase a gift voucher for someone who would appreciate this experience. Flax is not a demanding plant. Growing it is much less demanding than growing tomatoes, for example.
How will the project work?
During one seasonal cycle, you will receive practical information by email with instructions and videos on growing and processing flax. Participation also includes admission to related events (to be announced).
What is 1m2 of flax about?
About personal experience. You will experience what it is like to grow and process flax under domestic conditions. The fascinating process of transformation from seed to stalk, fibre to textile will broaden your understanding of the changing value of textiles in history and today.

How did the project come about?
The 1m2 flax project originated in Sweden. It is originally called 1 KVM LIN and has been organised by Hemslöjden since 2020. In 2020, the project started with three hundred participants and by 2024 it had approximately eight thousand. The project has also gained attention outside Sweden. In 2025 it took place in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and other countries.

Why flax?
Flax has historically had an important place in the Czech Republic. It was an important material for textile processing and at the height of its glory it was cultivated on tens of thousands of hectares locally. Today, however, it is unfortunately a craft and industrial asset that we have lost.
Therefore we want to bring flax back into wider awareness!
The Czech pilot year in 2025 was supported by Czech-German Fund for the Future. It was developed in cooperation with the German organisation TextilHandWerk e.V., the organiser of the 1qm Lein and Bertas Flachs, the organizer of 1 qm Lein in Austria.
